With a hardwood construction, this crib has a beautiful design and will add a touch of class to many nurseries, with the gorgeous fluted post design it is stylish and has plenty of substance too.
If you have purchased a second hand crib or even using the family heirloom crib that you slept in as a baby, make sure it still meets today`s standards. If it does not meet today`s standards either get it altered or purchase a brand new crib. Things to look out for in the crib from your youth is the type of paint used as it could contain lead, the space between slats and if the wood frame has splintered at all.
Today`s standards state that there should be no more than 60mm`s between the cribs bars. If a larger gap is used you baby my slip through the bars or become stuck in them. Make sure your crib is made out of hardwood such as oak, ash or maple. Use of a hardwood means that no matter what your baby/toddler does the cot pieces will not become loose or broken.
Wooden cribs are durable and if properly maintained, that is, regularly polished, painted and treated with anti termite solutions, they can last for as long as ten to thirteen years. They come with childproof latches as well as drop-sides that ease strain on caregivers` backs, assuring both infant safety and comfortable handling. These cribs also come with optional storage drawers that can have a multi purpose usage. The bedding used can also be adjusted according to one`s requirement. For example, its height can be decreased or increased using mattress adjusters. Such cribs are painted with special non-toxic paints and are given finishing touches in a manner that removes hard edges. This is done in order to avoid situations in which the child gets hurt due to rough edges or falls sick due to the harmful contents of the paint.
There are several safety features that you should look for when purchasing a new baby crib. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has enacted regulations to ensure the safety of your baby while in these beds. You should make sure that any baby crib that you may purchase has these specifications. The first regulation states that the vertical bars or slats should be no further apart than 2 3/8" or 60 mm. This prevents the baby`s body being able to fit through them and the child becoming lodged by his head.
